The Semantic Web research at MITRE has been increasing dramatically in the last few years. MITRE has several groups involved in projects related to the Semantic Web. These projects have included working with the Semantic Web community to standardize the Semantic Web technologies, using ontologies to retrieve data from databases, using ontologies to integrate disparate information systems, and context based semantic interoperability

• WMSL: Web Mashup Scripting Language

• The Web Mashup Scripting Language (WMSL) enables an end-user (you) working from his browser, e.g. not needing any other infrastructure, to quickly write mashups that integrate any two, or more, web services on the Web. The end-user accomplishes this by writing a web page that combines HTML, metadata in the form of mapping relations, and small piece of code, or script. The mapping relations enable not only the discovery and retrieval of the WMSL pages, but also affect a new programming paradigm that abstracts many programming complexities from the script writer. Furthermore, the WMSL Web pages or scripts that disparate end-users ("you") write, can be harvested by Crawlers to automatically generate the concepts needed to build lightweight ontologies containing local semantics of a web service and its data model, to extend context ontologies or middle ontologies, and to develop links, or mappings, between these ontologies. This enables an open-source model of building ontologies based on the WMSL Web page or scripts that end users ("you") write.

  • A well defined approach is needed for the exploitation of Data and Services (Web) semantics in the DoD enterprise to enable the harmonization of data standards. Our goal is to use Semantic Web technologies to harmonize multiple data standards across services, identify a set of reusable loose coupler (context) ontologies for the DoD enterprise, and enable automatic composition of Web services. This project builds upon the Semantic Integration of the C2 Enterprise project work to use Semantic Web technologies to enable interoperability of disparate information systems.

  • Integration of disparate information systems within an enterprise can be accomplished utilizing ontologies and semantic mapping.   • Today there is no systematic approach to representing, measuring, capturing, and using data quality information. We propose to use emerging Web tools to capture the semantics of data quality. Our results will be made available to decision makers to improve the decision-making process.
